A Struggle for Truth Always Remains

Aug 23, 2019

Truthfulness is something everyone deserves. Surely, you do not want to be manipulated into believing something untrue. Nowadays, however, challenges to the value of truthfulness has become both a global and national issue.

The advent of the internet revolutionized how we produce and access information. Search engines such as Google made it easier for anyone to get instant answers through our devices. However, this also lead to the faster spread of fake news. Anyone can produce polarizing opinion and post it online as facts. These would often lead to arguments that muddle the truth and endanger our relationships in the real world. In a culture of seeking quick answers, it is easy to forget the principle of critical analysis and self-reflection.

Truthfulness is also important in events such as the national election of new government officials. The credibility of the recent election in the Philippines was put into question because of reported anomalies. It is therefore vital for every citizen to demand transparency from its government. Given the power and influence of elected officials, we must ensure that the truthfulness of the election is not compromised.

We are called to communicate critically in a data-saturated world. It is important to not contribute in the spread of fake news and distinguish opinion from facts. This demands being self-aware, recognizing the need to verify what we hear, and listening empathically to what others have to say.
